1950's History

The Fabulous 50’s

Think back to a time when things were good. Think back to a time when the Rat Pack, Buddy Holly, Bing Crosby, and Ritchie Valens could be found on the radio. When Elvis Presley taught a generation of people how to move their hips and changed the course of music for forever. When you could go to the theater and see movies like I Was a Teenage Werewolf, The Ten Commandments, and Porgy and Bess. The television was becoming popular and when you turned it on you could find Father Knows Best and I Love Lucy on screen. These were the 1950’s, and they were a time when everything was great and wonderful. When the economy was up, violence in the United States was down, and when the US seemed like a great place to live in.

The Gas Station

In the 1950’s the gas station wasn’t what it is today. Back then cars were becoming increasingly more popular, and affordable, and so there were great numbers of them on the roads. Gas stations started popping up all over the nation, in small towns and in large ones, and you could expect to find excellent service at the gas pump. When you pulled up to a gas pump your car would likely run over a little air pressure valve which rang a bell in the main garage area. An attendant would rush out to take care of your vehicle. He would pump the gas and would do other small maintenance on your car, after which you could pay him and drive off with a full tank of gas and a very happy car.

One thing that made these gas pumps so notable is that they could be plugged in to light up. The globe on the gas pump would light up, inviting you to drive into the gas station and making it clear what brand of gas you were purchasing.

Collecting the 50’s

Many people love to collect pieces of times that meant a great deal to them, or times that reminded them about the good things in life. This is why you can find so many nostalgic items available for purchase and for collection.

One of the more unique collectors items that you can buy can not only remind you of an era gone by, but can also help you to decorate your home. Vintage gas pumps remind us a time when things were great, and when gas cost under a quarter. They bring us back to a time when full service attendants use to rush out to your vehicle to put the gas in it, and while they were at it they would check your oil and wash your windows!

Bringing Atmosphere

The atmosphere that used to be around the gas pumps in the 1950’s is the same atmosphere that you bring into your home when you install a vintage gas pump. Many of these replica gas pumps plug into the wall, allowing the gas pump globes to light up. When you light one of these up its almost like you can hear the slight ding of the bell in the garage which warns the attendant that your vehicle is ready to be serviced.

Nobody can deny that the 1950’s was a time of great wealth, and of great change. In the world many things changed, but in the US most remained oblivious of the changes and focused on making their lives as good as they could. If you’re looking to relive, or discover, something of the 1950’s, adding replica gas pumps to your home is one sure fire way to do just that, and to do it in such a way that you’re adding not only a memory, but something that is real and that is tangible to your home.
